Jecheon-si
Jecheon City is located in the northern region of Chungcheongbukdo, somewhere between Charyong Mountains and Sobaek Mountains. It borders Munkyeong City to the south, and Wonju City and Youngwol-gun to the north. It is a city of culture and tourism with the harmony of Mt. Woraksan National Park and Cheongpung Lake.
Ten Scenic Views of Jecheon
- Uirimji
- Uirimji has beautiful scenery with Ureukdae (played gayageum on this rock) of the Master Ureuk who was one of the three musicians of Korea as well as ‘Yeonghojeong’ that was built during the reign of King Sunjo, and ‘Gyeonghoru’ built in 1948, etc. Around this reservoir there are also pine trees that are hundreds of years old, a weeping willow, and a natural waterfall 30m in depth. From the first view of the 10 scenic views of Jecheon, it is one of the most loved attractions of Jecheon by men and women of all ages as a beautiful trail following the lake.
- Bakdaljae
- 'Bakdaljae' is an impressive mountain dividing Bongyang-eup and Baegun-myeon of Jecheon-si. Due to the 1960m tunnel that opened under the 'Bakdaljae' in 1997, less people pass through here but you can enjoy the sculptures of 'Bakdaldoryeong' and 'Geumbongnangza', and reproduced Seonghwangdang, which are all promoted by the city to create a tourist spot.
- Woraksan Mountain
- Woraksan Mountain belongs to the representative five beautiful mountains of Korea and is designated as the 17th national park with four faces. The view of Ambong seen from Songgye is magnificent as it goes from Yeongbong, Jungbong to Habong. Especially, Yeongbong in the rightmost encompasses those two brothers of Jungbong and Habong with hundreds of meters of high cliffs.
- Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex
- Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex was built to restore cultural heritages around Cheongpung Lake which once were submerged due to the construction of Chungju dam. Almost 2,000 living heritages are well preserved with the Hanbyeok Pavilion (Treasure No. 528), 2 Treasures and 9 Regional Tangible Cultural Properties on the site of 90,000 pyeong (3.3m2).
- Geumsusan Mountain
- Geumsusan mountain was originally called 'Baekun mountain' but 'Twegye Iiwhang' changed the name to 'Geumsu mountain' during the Joseon Dynasty as he admired it as ‘beautiful like embroidered silk’ when the trees turned red. Located on the boundary of Susan-myeon, Jecheon-si and Jeokseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, the mountains is 1,016m high at the northernmost end of Woraksan Mountain National Park.
- Yongha 9 Valleys
- There is a passage to the top of Weolaksan Mountain toward the Silleuksa Temple from Worak-ri, Deoksan-myeon, Jecheon-si and the valley splits into the two valleys of Yonghasu and Sumundong to Eoksu-ri direction. The entire valleys are16km in size and boast a primeval forest and scenery beyond description.
- Songgye Valley
- The 8km long Songgye Valley through Songgye-ri, Hansu-myeon, Jecheon-si to Mireuk-ri, Suanbo-myeon, Chungju-si is located in Jecheon which is in the middle of Suanbo and Danyang. It is the repository of a summer resort with a deep valley, fresh water, small and big mountain peaks including Worak Mountain, temples, etc.
- Ocksoonbong
- Woraksan Mountain국립공원에 속해 있는 Ocksoonbong은 Jecheon-si 수산면 괴곡리에 있습니다. 제천10경 중 8경에 속하는 Ocksoonbong은 지리적인 이유로 Gudambong Peak과 함께 단양 8경에 속하기도 합니다.Ocksoonbong seats벽에는 단구동문 이라는 네 글자가 새겨져 있으며 퇴계 이황선생이 각people하고 Ocksoonbong이라 이름지었는데 seats벽이 마치 우후 죽순처럼 솟아 오른 것 같다 하여 peoplepeople 된 것입니다.
- Taksajeong
- Located at the wayside around national highway No. 5 of Jecheon coming from Wonju, Gangwon-do, it is the only amusement park around Jecheon where most people visit for their summer vacation. Taksajeong as one of the ten scenic views of Jecheon refers to not only the pavilion itself but also to the picturesque scenery around the pavilion. It is ‘Daeam’ which is one of the 8 scenic masterpieces that Jungunho sang in the latter era of the Choson Dynasty.
- Baeron Holy Ground
- 'Baeron Holy Ground' is the pride of Jecheon where you can reconsider the meaning of this place as the refuge for Catholics after hearing the stories from the staff. It was named Baeron as the land resembles the bottom of a ship. There are the underground tunnels where the Catholic Hwang Sa-yeong resided and wrote the white paper, the tomb of the priest Choe Yang-eop, and the St. Joseph Theological School.
Danyang-gun
Danyang is known for its scenic beauty as the tradition of the Eight Views of Danyang has been around for a long time. Starting from Sainam in the south to Dodamsambong, the tourist attractions include the cave complex and Guinsa Temple and Ondalsanseong Fortress in the north. Especially, the majority of people come in the spring to see the royal azalea of Sobaeksan Mountain.

- Dodamsambong Peaks
- There are three stone peaks rising in the middle of Namhangang River. The stately standing rock in the center is called Janggunbong (Husband Rock), the rock on the north of it and slightly smaller is called Cheobong (Wife Rock), and the rock on the south is called Cheopbong (Mistress Rock).
- Seongmun (Stone Gate)
- About 300 meters up from Dodamsambong Music Fountain through the observatory is a large rainbow-shaped stone gate. This is called Seongmun which is believed to be the place where the enchantresses from the heaven sang a song while fluttering their skirts in the wind.
- Gudambong Peak
- Gudanmbong Peak got its name from the rock on the rugged cliffs that seems similar to a turtle. It is considered to be the most magnificent view the water transportation of Chungjuho Lake along with Jebibong Peak, Geumsusan Mountain and Woraksan Mountain.
- Sainam Rock
- The vertically soaring stone wall draws admiration from viewers and many poets and painters such as Danwon Kim Hong-do who came to paint or inscribe the beauty of it. It was named as Sainam by Utak who was a great scholar in the later Koryo Dynasty as he was taking a pleasure trip while serving as a government official of this Sain region.
- Haseonam Rock
- Classified as the first place of scenic beauty of simsanyugok (high mountains and secluded valleys) forming Samseon Valley, the three-story white rock spreads widely and the large round rock is placed on top of it, creating a magnificent view. It was called ‘Buddha’s Rock’ at first and later 'Twegye Iiwhang' named it as Haseonam Rock.
- Jungseonam Rock
- It is the center of Samseon Valley and numerous noted wise men and painters visited as they were constantly fascinated by the reflections of the white rocks and old pine trees on Doraksan Mountain, the light of granite colors and the clouds in a clear sky that are reflected vividly on the waters. And over 300 names are inscribed on the rock.
- Sangseonam Rock
- Though there is no large or wide rock around this area, it reminds one of simple and affectionate Koreans as there is a gathering of small rocks. The oddly shaped rocks on both banks and the clear sound of the mountain stream that flows day and night heightens the excitement of the passengers along with the birds singing all around the forest.
Chungju-si
With beautiful mountains, abundant hot springs, and Chungju lakeshore, the City of Chungju is focused on the construction of Leports Resort Tourist City, and offers various services within the Chungju city area including parks, sports and exhibition facilities.
Chungju Tourist Attractions
- Chungju Dam
- The dam is 97.5m high and 447m long withholding a reservoir of 2,750,000,000 m3 and there is a balancing reservoir dam which is 21m high and 480.7m long downstream of the main dam. On the left bank of Chungju Dam are the Water Exhibition Hall, Memorial Tower, and a resting area and there are the waterwheel resting area, heliport, as well as Chungju naru where you can board a pleasure boat.
- Jungangtap (Central Tower)
- There is an outdoor sculpture park around the Jungangtap on the large green lawn with Chungju Museum and Liquorium. You can enjoy summer leisure sports at Tangeumho Lake which was formed by building the balancing reservoir dam in Namhangang River, and a musical fountain attracts tourists.
- Tangeumdae Terrace
- The name Tangeumdae refers to this place where Ureuk, the one who made the instrument, the gayageum used to teach the gayageum and dances to his students. Tangeumdae Terrace was also the battlefield where General Shin Rip and his troops fought fierce battles against the invading Japanese forces. It is good place to take a walk as the scenery around the lake is beautiful and the trail is arranged well.

- Jungwon Mireungni Temple Site
- The legend is that Mauitaeja, the last prince of the Silla Kingdom erected a statue of Buddha to have it look upon the Buddha image carved on a cliff (Deokjusa Temple rock cliff Buddha) where his sister Princess Deokjju moved to. This is the only temple site facing north and it was built after the Seokguram Grotto, though the method is different from a cave temple.
